How nice to meet someone from The List and put a face to a name! Good to meet Lewis, his wife Renée and their daughter Emily.
Lewis has been playing the Uilleann pipes since November 1997. He started on a half-set constructed by Charles Roberts of Co. Sligo, Ireland. He currently plays a 3/4 set of pipes pitched in D by David Quinn of Vermont, USA. The drones and the mainstock are made of delrin, the fully keyed chanter and the regulators of ebony. The drones and the chanter were reeded and tuned by Benedict Koehler, the regulators were reeded by David Quinn with phosphor bronze reeds. I never saw this construction of the base drone before: the curl is INSIDE the thick part of the drone (that's the best description I can think of at the moment, makes you think of a bassoon, doesn't it?) and I was VERY surprised to see the same construction in the O'Mealy set of pipes (1900's) on display in the Ulster Museum. There are pictures of this set (four drone - one reg?) further on in the series. Lewis says that he particularly enjoys playing slow airs and hornpipes. Pipers that have influenced his learning the most include Benedict Koehler, Kevin Rowsome, Neil Mulligan, Patrick Hutchinson and Seth Gallagher. He has found the NPU series of educational videos to be most helpful and supplements his learning by attending tionols on a regular basis. When the reeds aren't behaving well, he spends his spare time oil painting and specializes in Irish landscapes. He is a physician living in Nashville, Tennessee. Having gland or hormone problems?
