Belgian Pipers Meeting 2002
Saturday October 12th the Belgian Pipers Meeting was held again, in Brussels as usual. This time I left one day early, to visit the Muziekinstrumentenmuseum (Museum of Musical Instruments). If you ever visit Belgium, this is a MUST SEE. A whole ground floor dedicated to folk instruments, including music samples you hear on the headset while walking around. The music changes when you reach a new (group of) instruments. The museum has its own website, look there for more information.
So, not only pictures of bagpipes this time, but also of hurdy-gurdies, fiddles, flutes, tin whistles and more.
At the pipers meeting on Saturday we met John Butler, who gave an introduction to the uilleann pipes to the public, played a recital and lend a helping hand teaching us afterwards. Nice bloke. Ofcourse, also some pictures of some special sets: Pat's new Alain Froment set (concert pitch, had the set for only three weeks), Olivier's new Marc van Daal full set (concert pitch, had the set for only three months) and the very first Hubert Kwisthout full set I've ever come across, although some of the drones were very early work by Andreas Rogge, so still not a full full set...
On Sunday, my wife Thirza went to the Waterloo Lion with our extremely hospitable host Roger De Wouters and sang a song about the battle. In the meanwhile, I was combing the local flea market, looking for musical instruments to fix. No luck this time... So all in all, a great weekend again, meeting old and making new acquaitances...

The bottom one, that's one of the few actual traditional folk instruments we have left in The Netherlands: it's an authentic Midwinterhoorn. Shouldn't need a translation. I have one and they're not easy to blow.

Why oh why didn't I take a closer look at the set in the left bottom corner when I was there. Lot's of questions now, what is it? Are these the pastoral pipes? The chanter has got a removable extension... Next time I'll take a closer look. Can't believe I let this slip...

A set by M. Dunn. O'Neill mentions a few Michael Dunn(e)s, but they're all pipers, not pipemakers. Any idea?

Double purfling! That always catches my eye, since I'm working on it myself on my own fiddle that's currently in the making. You definately need a LOT of patience getting this double purfling right. Mind you, same thing on the back of the fiddle.

Some people call the uilleann pipes the most refined member of the bagpipe family. Yet, I would not like to exclude these musette du court as a contender for the title... Only thing, those silk ribbons and stuff... a bit tacky. Nevertheless, very refined.
