22nd - 23rd & 24th February 2002: The Doran Weekend, County Wicklow, Ireland

What a wonderful weekend... Pipes, piping, pipers all over the place, frequently to the amazement of tourists who, on their way to the lakes in the Glendalough valley, happened to stumble upon this gathering of amazing musicians.

Located at one of Ireland's most beautiful spots, drenched in cultural heritage, a wonderful crowd of pipers from all over the world gathered in the Glendalough hotel for one weekend, to honour Johnny and Felix Doran. And to have a good time in general, actually. The only sad note was the news that a young member of the Doran family had been killed in a road accident in England.

There were plenty of sessions for different levels and pitches, a reed making workshop by Dave Williams and piping master classes by Kevin Rowsome and Leo Rickard.

The concert on Saturday night featured amongst others Paddy Keenan, Kevin Rowsome and Lorraine Hickey, John Rooney, John Purcell, Leo Rickard, Pat Broderick, Cormack O'Briain and Mick O'Connell and others.

I'll try to include names whereever I can with the pictures, please send me an e-mail when you have corrections or additions.

The same trio with in the background Kevin Rowsome, Lorraine Hickey, Dick, Francis, Dave Williams and a lot of people whose names I've forgotten or didn't catch.

Another session in the same lounge, simultaneously. At one point there were even three sessions going on there.

The one with the bellows is the young piper Mick O'Connell from Limerick (tought by Mickey Dunne) who would amaze us all the next night during the concert. The fiddler in the middle plays a BRASS FIDDLE! Never seen anything like it before...

Who are these pipers? I met the gentleman on the left before in Armagh at the 1999 William Kennedy Piping Festival but STILL I don't know his name.

That's Jarleth Henderson on the right with a Bflat set. A great piper who keeps going, going and going until there's nobody left to play with. Next to him another one of these young lads who have both an inspiring and frustrating effect on ones (at least mine) efforts to become a piper. Anybody who has the name of the piper on the left?

Paul Donnelly on the left, Roy from Israel in the middle and Darren (?) at the back, also on Bflat. I keep running into these three, Drumshanbo, Armagh and now here... I must start bringing a pencil and notebook to write down the names of all these people.

Lovely session, to use a an understatement. From left to right: John Rooney, Néillidh Mulligan, Alphie Mulligan (on the Felix Doran set), another piper whose name I don't have, Jarleth Henderson, John Purcell, Lorraine Hickey and Paddy Keenan.

A lovely duet this was, Kevin Rowsome on the right and a piper from Galway, I believe. He kept on playing when everybody else had gone and he played very nicely indeed... Anybody got his name?

The Concert! After one minutes' silence to remember the recent deaths in the Doran family and another tragic traffic casualty, it was John Purcell's honour to start the concert as a member of the Doran family.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the loveliest sounding set of musicians I've ever heard: Kevin Rowsome's and Lorraine Hickey. I love the combination of pipes and fiddle, but witnessing these two connect is a unique experience.

Paddy Keenan and Tommy O'Sullivan. Superb. Hearing Paddy play normally is a mindbogling experience, but this night he played like I never heard him play before.

Leo Rickard! Pure piping at it's best. It was good to see him again after last year's Dutch tionól and to join his class. He gave us The Frieze Breeches in great detail. Thanks again Leo!

And here's the concert's sensation everybody's raving about: Mick O'Connell (or Elvis as I heard him nicknamed). The most frustrating part of it all is that he's only been playing for five (FIVE!!) years.
