Cobblestone gigs

For work I had to be in London for two weeks mid February (and the two first weeks of March again!) and during the evenings instead of sitting all alone in my hotel room I roamed London from session to session, to the amusement of my colleagues. Thanks Alan and Alan, Thomas and Ed for your suggestions! I will compile a list of all of these sessions in the next couple of weeks and put it online for your convenience.

There we are at the Kilkenny Tavern in South Wimbledon on the Tuesday night, just next to the tube station's exit (on the right). The piper here is Brendan, who plays a Brendan Ring set, but made the chanter himself as well as a lovely snakewood flute. Again, please help me out with the names!

Alan O'Leary on the flute. He was the one who told me to be there on the Tuesday nights and I haven't regretted a minute of it. Great singing as well.

On the Sunday afternoon I went to the Porterhouse near Covent Garden and I was amazed by the beers they have on sale. Especially by a number of lovely Dutch beers: Christoffel, Korenwolf, Natte, Zatte etc.etc.etc.

And this was incredible. The Herschel Arms in Slough, on the Monday night. The publican told me proudly there were musicians present who had come all the way from The Isle of Weight, Bath and Kent.

The place was already packed when this girl with harp entered the place. No problem, stools were removed and enough space created. It was strange how people reacted when I said I'd go to Slough, it was like saying I'd join a polar expedition. And Slough is only twenty minutes by train from London Paddington.

At the back, behind the bódhran, Alan Burton: piper and reedmaker from Bath who told me about this session. Thanks Alan!

This is the place, The Herschel Arms. A bit blurred, but it was dark, no flash used and I had had a couple of pints...
